The John Deere 4650 is a very large and powerful machine. It originally appeared during a production run that lasted from 1983 until 1988. However it’s still popular and in use today due to it’s robust construction (something we have come to expect from JD). The JD 4650 was built to replace the John Deere 4640 tractor. The 4650 has a very powerful diesel engine. This 7.6 liter engine is turbocharged and uses a lubrication that has a capacity to hold up to 19.9 liters of oil. The engine fires with a compression ratio of 15.8:1. The liquid cooling system that prevents the engine from getting too hot is very large, with a capacity to hold up to 30.3 liters of water. The engine is started with 2, 6 volt batteries. These batteries are recharged via a 72 amp alternator (or a 90 amp alternator on the tractor with an operator’s cab).

The engine powers the closed hydraulic system on the John Deere 4650. This system operates with a flow rate of 157 bar (2277 psi). The rear hitch which is powered by the hydraulic system has a maximum safe lifting capacity of 3844 kg (8475 lbs). This is a category 3, 3 point hitch. The engine transmits power to the wheels using one of 2 gearboxes. One is a JD Quad-Range gearbox that uses a perma-clutch wet disc clutch to change gears. The Quad-Range transmission gives the tractor 16 speeds going forwards and 6 when it’s reversing. The other gearbox choice is a Power Shift unit that gives the JD 4650 15 gears going forwards and 4 when reversing. The top speed of the the tractor is 31.7 kph (19.7 mph) going forwards and 20.4 kph (12.7 mph) when it’s reversing.

There are a number of other similar tractors in the 50 series to the John Deere 4650. These include the John Deere 4250 and the John Deere 4450 tractors as well as the bigger John Deere 4850.
