John Deere 355D

The John Deere 355D lawn mower originally hit the scene in 1999 and continued being produced for another 2 years until JD stop manufacturing it. After this the John Deere GX355 lawn mower took over from it. Unlike most engines in John Deere mowers, the engine in the JD 355 is a diesel. This 2 cylinder Yanmar engine has a displacement of 0.753 liters and produces 18 hp to power both the wheels and mower deck. The engine is liquid cooled and has a paper based air filter to stop small particles of dust and other material from entering the combustion chamber and potentially clogging it.

Power to the wheels is controlled by a hydrostatic transmission that gives the John Deere 355D infinite speeds in both forwards and reverse. The wheels on the JD 355D are fairly large. Each rear wheel measures 23×10.5-12 (23 inch diameter, 10.5 inch width and 12 inch rim diameter) while each front wheel measures 16×6.5-8 (16 inch diameter, 6.5 inch width and 8 inch rim diameter).

The total weight of the John Deere 355D is fairly large at 321 kg (709 lbs), but this is simply due to the fact that the engine is a diesel and it has a liquid cooling system. Without a bagger attached to the back of it, the JD 355D is 1.83 m (72 inches) long, while with one, it is substantially longer at 2.39 m (94 inches). Unfortunately the turning radius of this lawnmower is quite large coming in at 0.6 m (23.6 inches). The engine is thankfully started with a 12 volt battery. An alternator of 20 amps then recharges the battery once the engine is turned on. Besides cutting your lawn, you can also use the 355 with other attachments that greatly expand it’s usefulness. These include snow blowers, front blades, a bagger (obviously), utility carts and more.
