John Deere 4250

The John Deere 4250 tractor is part of the ’50’ series from JD. This tractor was produced for a total of 6 years during the eighties, from 1983 until 1988. It took over from the John Deere 4240 when it finished production. The JD 4250 is powered by a diesel engine built by John Deere. This engine is a turbocharged 6 cylinder. It uses a liquid cooling system to keep the motor from overheating. The engine has a lubrication system that has a capacity to hold 17 liters of motor oil. The engine is fitted with a dry type air filter which cleans the intake, preventing dust and other particles from mixing with the fuel in the combustion chambers.

Like on the John Deere 4050 tractor, there is a choice of 2 different gearbox setups on the John Deere 4250. The first is a full power shift transmission that gives it 15 forwards and 4 reversing gears. The other gearbox option is a Quad-Range partial power shift transmission that provides you with 16 forwards and 6 reversing gears. The top speed of the JD 4250 going forwards is 29.4 kph (18.3 mph). On the regular model, the rear wheels each measure 18.4-38 (18.4 inch width, 38 inch rim diameter), while the front wheels each measure 10-16 (10 inch width, 16 inch rim diameter).

Unbeknownst to many there is actually a variant of the JD 4250 called the John Deere 4250 Hi-Crop. This tractor has a higher ground clearance of 0.76 m (30.3 inches) than the normal 4250 which has a ground clearance of just 0.4 m (15.8 inches). The Hi-Crop model has an operating weight of 6064 kg (13,369 lbs) while the regular (2WD) model has an operating weight of 6284 kg (13,855 lbs). You can leave a review of either tractor (regular or Hi-Crop John Deere 4250) using the form below. One Review of the “John Deere 4250”

  1. paul withers says:

Very impressed with general indestructibility of tractor despite very high hours [clock not working but estimate 20,000] my tractor is actually a 4240s but as far as i’m aware it is identical to 4250.Just bought another one just the same on lower hours.Have had problems with blocked transmission filter and pickup following clutch replacement as old clutch material not cleared with first oil draining and filtering leading to pump starvation.Beware of this as loss of pressure eventually causes loss of steering brakes pto and putsclutch into freewheel mode. Not a problem if you know about it and dont ignore it when pressure drops and pto drive starts dropping out etc .There is a short term brake backup pressure I understand .Main hydraulic[front pump now needs repair possibly due to oil cooler becoming completely blocked.

    Year of Manufacture: 1983
Pros: strong well built fantastic engine great pulling power and grip. lovely noise.Has been excellent for ploughing[twin assister rams] and foraging.Dont know if its been turned up but has ample power for mengele SH30.excellent brakes and transmission handbrake
Cons: first gear rather too fast for hedgetrimming and dungspreading with rotaspreader, My tractor is now very old and well used and suffering from rusty mudguards[completely disintegrated] and lower edges of bonnet.bit of a climb to get in.Quite a long tractor although good lock partially makes up for it.Quad range gearbox a bit tiresome and awkward if changing from 3rd /4th into reverse frequently.Only has closed centre hydraulics
Modifications: 580 70 38 rear tyres twin assister rams big bore stainless straight through exhaust
