The John Deere 4050 tractor is the smallest in the John Deere 50 series that also includes the larger John Deere 4250 and the John Deere 4450 tractors. However don’t think of the JD 4050 as a small tractor. It’s powered by a choice of 2 engines that both produce 130 hp. Both engines are obviously similar. They both use diesel and have 6 cylinders. Both engines are made in house by the team at JD. The engines are liquid cooled and turbocharged. One engine has a total displacement of 7.6 liters, while the other engine has a displacement of 5.9 liters. The fuel tank on the JD 4050 that supplies the engine with diesel has a capacity to hold up to 174.1 liters (46 US gallons).

The engine powers the John Deere 4050’s hydraulic system. This is a closed system whose capacity depends on what chassis the machine is built on. You have the option of purchasing it with either a 4X2 2WD chassis or a 4X4 MFWD 4WD chassis. The hydraulics system powers the rear hitch (category 1 or 2) to have a maximum lifting capacity of 3364 kg (7418 lbs). The weight of the JD 4050 varies depending on the chassis used. It’s operating weight with the 2WD chassis is 5769 kg (12,720 lbs).

Power from the engine on the John Deere 4050 reaches the wheels by first passing through one of 2 possible gearboxes. The first transmission choice is a JD Power Shift. This gives the JD 4050 15 speeds traveling forwards, 4 for reversing and a top speed of 29.3 kph (18.2 mph). The other transmission choice is a JD Quad-Range with partial power shift. This gives the tractor 16 forward and 6 reversing speeds. The gears on both transmissions are changed with a Perma-Clutch wet disc clutch.
