John Deere 1023E

The John Deere 1023E sub-compact tractor is a very useful tractor that is popular among a number of different people, whether they are farmers, large garden owners or even professional landscapers and gardening contractors. The JD 1023E is capable of a massive number of tasks, from mowing to digging trenches with a backhoe to moving material with the front end loader. The tractor uses a Yanmar 3TNM72 diesel engine that is naturally aspirated. This engine is a three cylinder model that uses a liquid cooling system with a capacity to hold 3.7 liters of coolant to bring heat away from the engine. The engine has a total displacement of 0.9 liters and produces 23.5 hp. The engine uses a dry dual stage air filter to clean the air intake of impurities that can damage the engine and potentially impede it’s performance. The engine is started with a keystart system that uses a 12 volt battery which supplies the engine with 500 cold cranking amps.

The engine is recharged with a 40 amp alternator when the engine is running. The John Deere 1023E uses a hydrostatic transmission (with Hi and Lo ranges) to power the wheels. This gives the sub compact tractor a top speed of 14.6 kph (9.1 mph) going forward. The total weight of the JD 1023E is not particularly high. It’s operating weight is 610 kg (1345 lbs). The front wheels on the tractor measure 18×8.5-10 (18 inch diameter, 8.5 inch width, 10 inch rim diameter), while the rear wheels are obviously bigger, each measuring 26×12-12 (26 inch diameter, 12 inch width, 12 inch rim diameter). You can get turf or industrial threaded tires for this tractor.

A 54 inch or a 60 inch mid mounted mower deck can be attached to the John Deere 1023E for cutting your lawn. The front of the JD 1023E can work with either a John Deere D120 front end loader or a John Deere H120 front end loader. The rear hitch is a limited category 1 that has a max safe lifting capacity of 650 kg (1433 lbs). The slightly larger model in this 1 series is the John Deere 1026R sub-compact tractor.

My first John Deere – always owned Kubota.
The 1023e is a very nice tractor

    Year of Manufacture: 2016
Pros: Very nice tractor – hydraulics slow less than 2200 rpm’s. does the job well. Quick disconnect great!

Cons: John Deere uses a lot of plastic.
The worst thing I hat about this tractor is the exhaust pipe points forward and all I breath in is exhaust, does john Deere know diesel fumes cause cancer? it should be pointed down or back?
The front grill has very protection from tree limbs.

After 100hrs, it still runs like new.. Couldn’t be happier..

    Year of Manufacture: 2014
Pros: This machine is far more tractor than most people will need.. The loader seems to have unending power – the deck goes on and off like butter.. The key to that is setting up the deck properly.. The quicktach system is outstanding.. Easy on, easy off with the loader – forks – plow and so on.. Great ergo’ foe getting on and off.. Love the side by Side forward and reverse peddles vs the treadle style on most competitors.. Good fit and finish and its easy to do basic maintenance yourself..
Cons: For the price it should have a clock in the dash and the 12v outlet and suspension seat should be standard on all 1 series machines not just on the 1025r/1026r.. Would love it if they could engineer these machines to have slightly larger diameter tires to smooth out the ride a bit when mowing (not really a con as all tractors in this class have smaller tires).. This is nit picky but there are a couple of grease points that i think they could make easier to get at.. I installed the forward liking kit for this machine and discovered I had to buy a separate wiring harness as well to install it.. The harness I had to buy is included on the 1025/1026.. It cost me $15 extra and seems silly that it wouldn’t just be included on all 1 series..

it would be great little tractor if it all worked properly

    Year of Manufacture: 2012
Pros: it’s a good little tractor for most things , power , handling and doing what it’s made for , it’s not a big tractor . but it does well for most things
Cons: been having trouble with the 3 point system from just about word go , the rock shaft keeps losing the C clip on the end of it wether i’m just using the D 60 mower deck or wether I put an attachment on the back and I only have two of them , and both for a cat 1 use .. the worst part is when it pops the clip on the shaft the shaft slides out to the other side , thank god it hasn’t gone all the way thru yet … the dealer doesn’t have a clue what is wrong or how to fix it and deere corp has been no help … but now the warrant is out so it’s all my baby
Attachments: back blade and a regular blade that I use to snow removal
Modifications: . none .. don’t have a clue to fix it .. and no help from deere

I like. Think they are on the right track with the quick attach attachments. I can unhook the loader in less than 10 minuts. I can mount or dismount the backhoe in about 15-20 minutes. The mower is a snop just a click.I would recomend this tractor to anyone who can use it’s size.

    Year of Manufacture: 0
Pros: Lots of guts for it’s size. Comfortable.Good lighting.
Cons: Whish it was easier to get the hood side panel off & on. Should be a spring/rubber latch instear of a bolt that you need 2 wherces to take off & on. Wish the seat was easier to turn around for backhoe use.
Attachments: ^0″ belly mout mower. Great but had trouble at first getting it to go on untill I found out the hooks were filled with paint. Wooks fine after I ground that out. Loader is a fine tool. Backhoe works great.
    Modifications: None.

  5. John says:

It works great as long as you can keep parts from falling off of it due to John Deere’s design. The brake being on the left side makes it too easy to slam on the gas rather than the brake. Dangerous.
The Bucket attachment worked as advertised. Very happy with it. The brush hog has caused me a lot of headache.

    Year of Manufacture: 2013
    Pros: Runs good.
    Comfortable ride
    Goes anywhere
Cons: Brake should be on the right instead of on the left
Need weights to keep one end or the other on the ground.
    Spring loaded pins fall off
    Attachments: Brush hog
    Bucket
Modifications: We have a brush hog attachment. Most of the attachment points are held together with a spring loaded pin. The first time we used the brush hog these pens fell out and you have to take most of the attachment points apart to put the pins back in which fall out again every time you use it. I safety wired the pins into place and replaced some of them with self locking nuts and bolts. We had to bolt the tail wheel onto the Brush Hog as well as the pin fell out of it the first time we used it.

  6. JD Disappointment says:

    FRUSTRATED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Year of Manufacture: 2011
Pros: Great idea on quick dismount.
Cons: We purchased a JD1023E and have been very disappointed. When originally dropped off, the dealer had us drop the deck and remount, which it took 3 times to make that happen. Dealer stated it was on gravel. But here we are 8 months later and whether we are on asphalt, grass, etc. we still are having a very difficult time getting the deck to click on. Everything lines up, except the very back seems to be 1/2″ short to make the connection to lift the deck. We have had dealer here again but they can’t or won’t find anything wrong. WE are so ready to tell them to take and back and shove it.
Attachments: Bucket and mover deck and bag
    Modifications: None
