Craftsman LT2000

The Craftsman LT2000 garden tractor lawn mower is from the same series of mowers as both the Craftsman LT4000 and the Craftsman LT3000. The mower deck that is attached to the LT 2000 has a cutting width of 42 inches. This deck is has 2 blades and is made from 13 gauge steel. The deck is raised and lowered using a hand lever from a height of up to 4 inches down to a minimum height of 1.5 inches. In total the cutting deck has 6 different heights that it can operate at. On the edge of the mower deck you will notice anti scalping wheels (these are the small black wheels). These guide the deck over your lawn to make sure the blades don’t cut into the ground.

The motor that powers the mowing deck on the Craftsman LT2000 garden tractor is a Briggs and Stratton Gold model that provides 20 hp. This OHV engine has a full pressure lubrication system. It’s single cylinder has a cast iron liner. The air intake into the engine is first filtered through a paper air filter to remove any small particles that might disrupt the combustion process. The total displacement of the engine comes to 0.502 liters. Power is transmitted to the wheels of the LT 2000 through a hydrostatic transmission which gives the garden tractor infinite speeds going forwards as well as in reverse.

The rear wheels on the Craftsman LT2000, through which power is transferred each measure 18×9.5-8 (18 inch diameter, 9.5 inch width, 8 inch rim diameter) while the front wheels which are responsible for steering the lawn tractor each measure 15×6-6 (15 inch diameter, 6 inch width, 6 inch rim diameter). The total weight of the LT 2000 lawnmower comes to 230 kg (507 lbs). If you have previously owned or currently own an LT2000 tractor from Craftsman then please leave a review of it below.

It has been a very good tractor. Had to put a new cam in the Intek engine after about 8 years which I heard is common? That was 4 or 5 years ago and it’s still going. It hasn’t been babied either, I’ve paid 4 different people to cut my 2 acres with it over the last 12 years.

    Year of Manufacture: 2011
Pros: Takes a beating. Cuts nice.
Cons: Not very fast, actually slow.
    Attachments: 46 inch mower deck
    Modifications: None

Previous owner smoked the engine due to no oil. Refitted with B+S 21 Hp. Then the transmission blew, possibly due to speed shifting from 5 to 6 gear while in motion. This is when I got it. I purchased a used replacement trans, and now the whole package runs really well. Not as rugged as my IH 582, but still does very well. Plenty of power. I would recommend to new buyer.

    Year of Manufacture: 1970
Pros: Mows well, starts well, drives well
Cons: It seems I can’t raise cutting height enough.
Attachments: Wheel weights, front blade, tire chains
Modifications: Fuel shutoff before fuel pump

This Briggs & Stratton motor is known to have a lot of problems. Mine experienced a blown head gasket within the first 50 hours of use. Then the diode (which is used instead of a voltage regulator in the charging system) went bad, leeching power from the battery. Replacing the diode meant replacing the alternator (because it’s all one unit which is kinda dumb.) That meant pulling the flywheel. If it used a voltage regulator the replacement would take 5 minutes. It’s a bigger issue if you have to pull the flywheel. I expected more from Briggs & Stratton, but YouTube has a vast array of videos on repairing this series, so there’s definitely a design problem with this engine.

    Year of Manufacture: 2013
Pros: Cuts great when it runs.
    Cons: Poorly designed motor
    Attachments: Grass Catcher

I own 4 acres of woods in pa. Bought the mower used for 400.00 after purchase the owner started it up ran really bad. I bought a carb from Sears for 80.00. Ran great every since. I use this mower like a bush hog. Cut small shrubs, trees, leaves and anything else that grows in the woods. This mower has cut through it all no problems. Changed belt three times over 5 years. Hit rocks jammed logs up under the deck. Climbed hills pulled a 2000 Hyundai Alantra up drive way from back yard. My neighbor alway bitchen bout his John deer mower he shakes his head when watching what I put my mower through. Beside belts and oil changes it been worth what I paid 10x. Oh pulled pop up trailer and utility trailer loaded with wood. Impressive.

I live on a property just shy of 2 acres and this mower does a fine job for the most part. On the flats this mower cuts, mulches, or collects grass with the best of them. Blade height is easy to set and control (deck rollers help too). The mower can climb hills on the back of the property without much trouble at all, but stability issues start to present themselves. I never know whether to air down tires, if it’s the height of the grass and mower moving too quickly, or moisture causing a little wheel slippage. Grass occasionally clumps under deck and doesn’t mulch/discharge as well in this scenario. Lastly, on the uneven portions of the lawns edge WATCH OUT! This is where mower gets tippy, deck hangs up, and if the obstruction is big enough you’ll probably end up sheering off a spindle. I’ve purchased two DECK REBUILD KITs (About $120 on eBay) over the 12+ years I’ve owned. Overall I think the mower does a good job, performs well, isn’t the hardiest/toughest, but good value for the money!

I would NOT recommend anyone to buy this mower.

    Year of Manufacture: 0
Pros: starts and run fine. See Cons.
Cons: From day one this tractor leaves a strip on unmowed grass right down the center. It is commonly referred to a Mohawking.
Sears has sent SEVERAL repair tech’s out attempting to correct this problem. No luck, it’s still Mohawking.
One tech said this problem is a common problem.
