Massey Ferguson 231

The Massey Ferguson 231 compact utility tractor is a very popular MF model from the late eighties and early nineties. It enjoyed a very long and successful production run from 1989 until 1999. The MF 231 is powered by a Perkins 3 cylinder diesel engine. the engine itself has a 2.5 liter engine and is kept from overheating through a liquid cooling system requiring 10.6 liters of coolant to fully fill the system. The total power output of the engine comes in at 38 horse power (hp). This power is then transferred to the wheels via a transmission that gives the tractor 8 gears going forward and 2 gears in reverse.

The fuel tank on the Massey Ferguson 231 can hold 48.1 liters (12.7 US gallons) of diesel. The engine on the MF 231 sits on a 4×2 2WD chassis. As it’s such a small tractor, it doesn’t actually come with a tractor cab. Instead it comes with a ROPS (roll over protection system) bar). The open hydraulic system on the tractor needs 34.8 liters (9.2 US gallons) of hydraulic fluid to make sure it’s fully filled. The total weight of the tractor comes to 1843 kg (4065 lbs), but obviously this can increase by quite a bit if there are attachments added or if the tractor is ballasted.

The Massey Ferguson 231 is a very useful and well liked tractor from MF. It was rolling of the assembly line for 10 years before production finally finished and this is a testament to just how immensely popular this Massey is. There is also a large number of attachments available from Massey Ferguson that are compatible with the MF 231 which further increase it’s usefulness.

One Review of the “Massey Ferguson 231”

  1. Reid says:

It’s an OK tractor if you’re a tiny person , massey ferguson could have done a lot better than this!

    Year of Manufacture: 1993
Pros: Lovely tractor, starts really good, great on fuel ,has enough hp for the size, power steering, differential lock easy to read gauges.
Cons: Not enough room to mount and you get your feet tangled in the shift levers, really hate the brake lock ! No oil pressure Guage, poor lights in front, no option to purchase cab, what ever the reason to have a removable front grill in more than I know.
    Attachments: Snow blower,
    Modifications: None
