The John Deere 850 compact utility tractor is a part of the same series of compact utility tractors that includes both the John Deere 650 and the John Deere 750 tractors as well as the smaller John Deere 950 tractor. The JD 850 had a production run of 12 years from 1978 until 1989, which when compared to today’s JD tractors is an incredibly long time. This compact utility tractor could be used as a lawn mower for large gardens when a 72 inch wide mowing deck is mid mounted. Under the hood, you will find a diesel engine that is provided by Yanmar. This engine is liquid cooled with a cooling system that can hold up to 5.7 liters of water. The engine is a 3 cylinder model that fires at a compression ratio of 21.2:1. The total displacement of this naturally aspirated engine is 1.3 liters. It’s power output comes to 22 hp (less than some JD tractor lawnmowers).

The John Deere 850 is built on a choice of either a 4X2 2WD or a 4X4 MFWD 4WD chassis. The 8 forward speed (2 reversing speed) gearbox transfers power from the engine to the wheels. The rear wheels each measure 11.2-24 (11.2 inch width, 24 inch rim diameter), while the front wheels which steer the tractor each measure 5-15 (5 inch width, 15 inch rim diameter). The total weight of the JD 850 comes to 1088 kg (2400 lbs). It has a wheelbase of 1.62 m (64 inches).

You can still find the JD 850 on building sites, large estates and small farms today as it’s compatible with a range of loaders (like the John Deere 80) as well as backhoes (like the John Deere 8A). If you have ever previously used this compact utility tractor (even many years ago), then please leave a review of your experiences below to give others an idea of what they should expect from it.
