John Deere 140 Lawnmower

The John Deere 140 lawnmower is probably the most famous lawn mower of them all. Think of it as the mac-daddy of all lawn mowers. This model packs a whopping 23 horse power in it’s Briggs and Stratton designed and built motor. That’s a lot of power for just one mower. So you can understand why this mower is the choice of many professionals in the gardening industry. Check out some of these fantastic stats:

  • The John Deere 140 boasts a 48 inch mower deck (that’s 4 feet!). That’s very large, so buying this mower for a small garden would honestly be quite pointless. But if you own a large garden, then this will take care of all your grass cutting needs.
  • All controls are compact. This means that if you are regularly cutting around low lying branches, you do not have to worry about them getting caught and damaged as is the case with other lawnmowers. Instead the controls for operating the cutting height, engaging/disengaging the blade and emptying grass are all carefully designed so the chances of one snagging on a branch and getting damaged is limited.
  • The John Deere 140 lawnmower has a easy to read fuel gauge and LCD screen showing the operating time so that you always know exactly when you need to refuel or bring her in for servicing.
  • As with nearly any garden lawn mower these days, it comes with the option of either using a bag to collect the cuttings or using a mulch cover so that the clippings can provide nutrients to the soil as they decompose.
  • Finally, it’s good to know that the John Deere 140 is constructed of 12 gauge steel and was roboticaly welded to ensure a precise, durable and strong weld.

Greta to use but very disappointing mechanical failure after a short time.

Pros: Powerful mower with large cutting deck makes fast work of a large grass area even when the grass is wet or long. 3 in 1 blades work effectively for bagging, discharge or mulching even on quite long grass.
Cons: The biggest con is the poor reliability – specifically the failure of the transmission after only 180hrs. This is quite unacceptable for a manufacturer that prides itself on quality. Because it is a sealed unit it is expensive to replace. This is a significant weakness of this model – and looking around on the internet it is a common problem.
    Attachments: Mulching plug, bagger
    Modifications: none
