The John Deere 8970 tractor is the largest machine in the John Deere 8070 series of articulated 4×4 tractors. The 3 smaller models are the John Deere 8570, the John Deere 8770 and the John Deere 8870 tractors. This large tractor is the model that superseded the John Deere 8960 tractor. The JD 8970 tractor is very heavy weighing in at 15,265 kg (33,655 lbs). This weight is supported on very large wheels (all of which are the same size). The wheels each measure 20.8-42 (20.8 inch width, 42 inch rim diameter). Most of the time you will see farmers/contractors using dual wheels on the tractor.

The John Deere 8970 powers the wheels using a massive engine that is built by Cummins. This engine is a turbocharged diesel motor that has a total displacement of 14 liters. This allows it to produce and amazing 400 hp. The engine is liquid cooled using a radiator system that holds a massive 68.1 liters of water. The 6 cylinder engine fires at a compression ratio of 14 to 1. The engine uses a dual element paper air filter together with an aspirator to purify the air intake of particulate matter and dust before it enters the combustion chambers. The engine powers the closed center hydraulic system. This system has 3 valves and operates at a flow rate of 169.6 liters per minute (44.8 US gallons per minute). The total volume of the hydraulic system is 143.8 liters (38 US gallons).

The fuel tank on the John Deere 8970 articulated tractor has the capacity to hold up to 832.7 liters (220 US gallons) of diesel, meaning that you’ll rarely need to bring it in for refilling.
