John Deere X585

The John Deere X585 lawn mower is very large garden tractor usually bought and used by commercial landscapers or garden contractors. The sheer size and power of this lawn mower means that it’s not that suitable for individuals, for the simple reason that it is quite expensive and buying such a powerful machine for cutting just one lawn would not make much sense (unless of course you have and 8 acre lawn!).

The JD X585 was manufactured for only 4 years from ’02 to ’06. It boasts an extremely powerful liquid cooled, V twin engine that pumps out 25hp that transfers in a mowing deck that can be either 48 inches, 54 inches or a massive 62 inches wide. The John Deere X585 is capable of converting this 25hp into a very nifty forward speed of 8.5 mph, while it can manage up to 5 mph in reverse, all which can be shifted into 4 wheel drive (4WD). This engine also powers a 12v output for powering optional attachments or just to charge your cell phone.

The fuel tank on the x585 holds an impressive 6.5 US gallons, allowing you to cut for a long, long time before needing refueling. As with most of the larger, modern John Deere lawnmowers, the John Deere X585 has cruise control which makes cutting ‘boring’, flatter, straighter areas much easier. It also has very large tires for a lawn mower, measuring 26 inches (diameter) by 12 inches (width) at the back and the front tires measure 18 inches (diameter) by 8.5 inches (width). The turning radius for this model is 28 inches, which is reasonable considering that it measures 75 inches (190 cm) long by 55.7 inches (118cm) wide.

So this garden tractor is definitely a beast when it comes to size and power, but you may find that you are better off using a much smaller model in your own home, as turning one of these things is a lot more difficult than a small, compact mower. I had an Ariens from the ’70’s and it was quite heavy but needed chains in the winter and had an unstoppable snow blower, but it was front heavy and hard to steer. The X585 is a dream to operate with the snow blower on in the winter, the power steering makes it easy to turn, and switching to 4X4 is very simple although I don’t need it unless I go off the driveway. With the cab on I don’t get covered in snow when blowing or dirt when tilling. I have a cab heater but have never installed it as I’d rather it be an electric heater than a water set-up, I really don’t want to cut into the cooling system. Probably need a bigger alternator for that. I have had the x585 for about 8 years now and would not get a smaller tractor ever again.

    Year of Manufacture: 2003
Pros: Heavy well built, start right up even in cold weather, NW Wisconsin.
Cons: No heated seat or steering wheel or cab heat.
Attachments: Hard Cab, mower, snow blower, push blade, tiller, trailer.
Modifications: Has rear pro and three point attachment for the tiller.

First, sorry, but the site did not allow me to leave rating scores above. Now the review. I bought my X585 in 2016 used. It had 560 hours on it and I’ve since added about 350 hours. It is a great, versatile machine with superior traction especially in 4WD. I was immediately impressed with its turning radius in 2WD. I have a 185′ long driveway where much of it is a 10 degree pitch and I have only occasional issues with slippage while snow blowing the driveway when going up hill (I don’t need chains). I bought it with the mower deck, bagger, and snow blower. Shortly thereafter I added the loader and 3pt hitch, both of which greatly expanded the machine’s versatility. My wife didn’t understand why I wanted the loader, but now that we have it, she loves what it allows us to do – dig out large rocks, move gravel, move bulky/heavy items outdoors, and more. I added chain hooks and bolt on pallet forks to the loader that have come in handy moving trees, brush and even wishing wells. I truly love the machine and wish I had gotten one when we first built our house, but even then the tractor alone without attachments was over $11k. The way I bought it used, I got it for $9k. The snow blower alone with connections is worth about $3500.

    Year of Manufacture: 2002
Pros: Strong. Versatile. Great traction. Quiet idle. Selectable 4WD.
Cons: Lack of separate hydraulic control for mower deck/3pt hitch. Lacks the torque of its diesel brother, the X595.
Attachments: 54C mower deck, 14-bushel bagger with powerflow, 45 loader, Ruegg Cat 1 3pt hitch, 13 Steel dump cart, Heavy Hitch draw/weight bar, front dethatcher
Modifications: Added Ruegg 3pt hitch. Boosted base hydraulic pressure from 950 psi to 1250 psi, upgraded to deluxe seat

I bought this tractor in 2003 . After 19 yrs of service it has been an excellent machine doing many tasks, hauling wood, mowing , snow blowing , moving my 12 ft cargo trailor, and even pulling small stumps. No need for chains in winter the 4×4 does it easy. After looking at the new x738 set up like mine for $18000, the x585 is heads and shoulders all around better than the x738. Not being able to take the 4×4 out of gear on the x738 is huge for the gas usuage.
The subpar reviews on the x 738 made me think twice. After all the years of use it has been in the shop twice , once for a o-ring leak ( just wear ) and the 600 hr service. CAN’T BEAT THAT.

    Pros: excellent
    Cons: few
