The John Deere 1600 is the biggest, baddest, most powerful John Deere lawnmower that you can currently buy. It’s more like a tractor than a lawnmower. The engine powering the JD 1600 is a Yanmar model that produces an amazing 57.3 hp. This engine has a displacement of 1.995 liters and is liquid cooled by a system that requires 7.5 liters of water to fully fill it. There is also a fully pressurized lubrication system that keeps the engine oiled throughout operation. The dual element air filter keeps the air intake free from particulate matter that can clog the engine.

The John Deere 1600 uses a Tuff Torq hydrostatic transmission which makes it an automatic with it’s speed controlled by the foot pedals. It uses internal wet disc brakes for rapid and controlled deceleration. The diesel Yanmar engine on the JD 1600 wide area mower is key started by a 12 volt battery that provides the engine with 650 cold-cranking amps. This battery is recharged through a 55 amp alternator. Thanks to it’s power steering, the 1600 is very easy to control on rough ground.

The maximum cutting width of the John Deere 1600 is 128 inches, but this can be adjusted lower to 94 inches or even 62 inches by removing the side mower decks. All the mower decks are constructed from 7 gauge steel for strength and durability. The cutting deck can be lowered all the way down to 1 inch above the ground level and up to 5.5 inches above the ground, giving it a very big range of 4.5 inches. The mower deck ‘floats’ so that it follows the contours of the ground it travels over, giving a very even cut even when you are working on grass that has many dips and mounds. If the JD 1600 is too big for your needs, then you may find the John Deere 1545 or the John Deere 1565 lawnmowers smaller but similar in design.
