Ariens Lawn Tractor 54

The Ariens Lawn Tractor 54 ride on lawn mower is powered by a Large twin cylinder Courage engine that has been designed and produced by Kohler. This engine has a displacement of 0.725 liters and an output of 25 hp. The engine is started using an electric starter mechanism. Just like the Ariens Lawn Tractor 42 and the Ariens Lawn Tractor 46 lawnmowers, the Ariens 54 inch lawnmower uses a hydrostatic transmission to transfer power from the engine to the wheels of the mower. To control how fast you travel on this mower you simply need to press the gas pedal further down to speed up and release it to slow down.

The top speed of the Ariens 54″ tractor lawnmower is 8.8 kph (5.5 mph) going forward and 4 kph (2.5 mph) when reversing. The mower deck on this Ariens lawnmower has a cutting width of 54 inches. This should have been easily guessed from the name! The mower deck has 3 small blades instead of one large one which makes it far more efficient at cutting your lawn. The turning radius of this lawnmower is very reasonable for a lawnmower this size. The minimum turning radius is just 18 inches.

The Ariens 54 inch garden tractor lawnmower is a lot more durable than either the Ariens 42 lawnmower or the Ariens 46 lawnmower for the simple fact that the front axle is constructed from cast iron and not steel. You’ll be glad to know that you will find headlights on this machine as standard which means that you can operate it easily in the dark and twilight. Worked well the first year (2011). The start of this year, there was a squealing coming from transaxle when using reverse, not all the time, just every once in awhile.

However, after a month of use, tractor threw drive belt. Upon inspection, it turned out the two bolts holding the front of the transaxle to frame were gone, the transaxle had bent down 4 inches from the frame, and where the axles were bolted to the rear sub-frame had cracked that area of the frame on both the left and right side.

Took to a service center…turns out this is a warranty item, and Ariens knows about this issue. Seems the bolts holding the transaxle to the frame were either never installed at the factory, or they were never torqued properly, and ended up falling out (although I have never found them in the yard). Took three weeks to repair, and Ariens has a fix-it kit for this fault.

Too bad…it is still a good tractor, but this tarnished it a little bit.

Pros: Mows great. Steel used in hood, fenders, etc instead of plastic.
    Cons: Reliability

This mower is made by Husqavarna for Ariens, it is basicly a older model craftsman GT5000/6000 with the steel body panels/hood. Its very heavy at 698lb and it has either a K66 hydrostatic or a 6 speed Peerless 820, both heavy duty tranys. too bad Craftsman dumped the old GT steel tractor to now sell the ‘plastic’ new model, for that reason Ariens got my business. the 25 hp is very powerful at times scary and I also have a big diesel Yanmar but the Ariens is very very quick. Im very happy with it, Hopefully Ariens wont go the ‘plastic’ way and ruin this awesome mower.

    Year of Manufacture: 2011
Pros: Steel Hood, thick frame, cast iron front axle, simple design, large size, very heavy tractor, powerfull engine, heavy duty transmission.
Cons: Could always be bigger, but I fell that way about everything…
    Modifications: sleeve hitch, front blade.
