John Deere 5045

The John Deere 5045 utility tractor is the smallest in the 5000 series from JD. There are actually 2 variants of the JD 5045. One is the John Deere 5045D and the other is the John Deere 5045E. The only difference between these 2 machines is the hitch. One has a 5D series 3 point hitch while the other machine has a 5E series 3 point hitch. Other than that they are completely the same machine with the same engine. The engine that powers the the 5045 is designed and built by JD themselves. It’s a PowerTech 3029 diesel, turbocharged engine. The engine has a displacement of 2.9 liters and a power output of 45 hp. The engine is kept from overheating with it’s liquid cooling system.

Similar but larger models of the John Deere 5045 include both the John Deere 5055D and the John Deere 5055E utility tractors. Power from the engine on the JD 5045E is transferred to the wheels through a SyncShuttle hydrostatic transmission that gives the tractor 9 gears going forward and 3 when it’s reversing. On the JD 5045D, the transmission is a SyncReverser which gives it 8 speeds traveling forwards and 4 for reversing. The hitch that comes with the JD 5045E has a maximum lifting capacity of 1447 kg (3192 lbs) while the hitch on the JD 5045D has a maximum lifting capacity that’s a little lower at 1274 kg (2810 lbs).

The John Deere 5045 utility tractor comes with 2WD and a differential lock which gives it better traction when traveling over uneven ground. As well as coming with full front lighting, you’ll also be glad to know that this JD 5045 utility tractor also has a rear halogen work light to illuminate the area where you may be reversing into. You’ll be glad to know that this machine comes with hydrostatic power steering which makes it less stressful operating it on uneven at high speeds.

  1. Tim Galyon says:

Good machine. I live in East Tennessee in the ridges. I widened my front and rear wheels. The factory settings were dangerous for my farm. I am cutting, raking, and square baling about 15 acres, plant about 3 acres of food plots, Bush hog 10 acres, and keep my property cleaned up. This tractor does a good job. I now have 280hrs without a problem. I’m just disappointed in the power. I guess I was spoiled by the old David Brown.

    Year of Manufacture: 2017
    Pros: Reliable,
Cons: Feels weak compared to same hp David Brown, uses much more fuel than the David Brown also
Attachments: Haybine, 273 NH baler, 6ft bog, 6ft rotary cutter, front end loader
    Modifications: None

Im using my John Deere 5045E as a woods tractor with my tree winch 3 point hitch and 3 point wood chipper… perfect for my large acreage in New Hampshire! Built like a tank, 1450 hours and runs and looks like new.

    Year of Manufacture: 2010
Pros: Power, Reliability, built like a tank compared to a similarly priced Kabota.
    Cons: None.

Have 2400 hrs on my ford 2120 with clam bucket and thinking now I might should have bought another Ford.

    Year of Manufacture: 2012
Pros: Turning, FE loader lifting ability, access to grease fittings for maintenance
Cons: Front end loader was a half of an inch higher on one side and had to be replaced.
Lever for clam bucket not user friendly, should be a joystick with clam bucket switch on top of joystick.
With eleven hours on the machine it has developed a vibration in the motor.
