John Deere Z840A

The John Deere Z840A zero turn lawn mower is one of the larger zero turn machines in the Pro 800 Series from JD. The JD Z840A has a choice of 2 different sized mower decks. The larger has a cutting width of 60 inches, while the smaller has a cutting width that comes in at 54 inches. Each deck has 3 belt driven blades housed inside a 7 gauge steel deck. Both decks are over 10 inches wider than their cutting widths due to the protective plastic discharge flaps located on the side of the deck which prevents grass clippings and other debris from potentially flying up into the air. Both mower decks on the JD Z840A can be raised as high as 5 inches above the ground and down as low as 1.5 inches above the ground in very small 0.25 inch increments.

The John Deere Z840A carries most it’s weight on the rear wheels, which are much bigger than the front wheels. Each rear wheel is 24×12-12 (24 inch diameter, 12 inch width, 12 inch rim diameter), while each front wheel is just 13×6.5-6 (13 inch diameter, 6.5 inch diameter, 6 inch rim diameter). The main function of the front wheels on the JD Z840A is to balance the mowing deck. The rear wheels are responsible for driving it forward as well as changing it’s direction. Power is transferred from the engine to the rear wheels through a dual hydrostatic transmission that gives it a top speed of 19.3 kph (12 mph).

The engine in the John Deere Z840A that supplies this power to the wheels and mower deck is a Kawasaki twin cylinder that produces 26 hp from a total displacement of 0.675 liters. If you are looking for a zero turn lawn mower that is a little more powerful than this one, then you should check out the John Deere Z850A, while if it’s less power you are after, then perhaps the John Deere Z830A will be more appealing to you.
