The John Deere Z710A zero turn lawn mower is powered by a Kohler Command engine. This engine is a 2 cylinder model that has a total displacement of 0.674 liters. The engine features overhead valves and is kept cool using an air cooling system. The maximum power output from this Kohler engine is 23 hp. The JD Z710A features an operator presence system for safety. It has a top speed of 16.1 kph (10 mph) when traveling forwards, while in reverse it can reach a max speed of 7.2 kph (4.5 mph). Remember the rear wheels on this lawnmower both power it and control it’s speed. The amount of power that each rear wheel receives is controlled by the corresponding lap bars in front of the driver. By pushing each lap bar in opposite directions, you can execute zero radius turns. Speed on the mower is controlled using an internal wet disc braking system.

The rear wheels on the John Deere Z710A zero turn mower which do most of the work each measure 22×11-10 (22 inch diameter, 11 inch width, 10 inch rim diameter) while the front wheels, which really only balance the mower deck and help to prevent it from scraping the ground in front each measure 13×5-6 (12 inch diameter, 5 inch width, 6 inch rim diameter). The mower deck on the JD Z710A is a special “7 Iron II” deck which is made from a single piece of stamped 7 gauge steel. This means that it’s much less likely to break than a corresponding deck made from welded or bolted 7 gauge steel.

There are a total of 4 castor (anti-scalping) wheels attached to the front of the mower deck on the John Deere Z710A (2 in the middle, one on either side). These keep the floating mowing deck follow the contours of the ground it’s traveling over. The total cutting width of this mower is 48 inches. Other zero turn mowers from JD include the John Deere Z445 and the John Deere Z655.
