The John Deere WH48A one of the biggest walk behind, self propelled lawn mowers that JD produce. Perhaps you are after something similar but smaller. If that’s the case then you may be interested in the John Deere WH36A lawnmower while, if you are looking for something with an even wider cutting width, then the John Deere WH52A may take your fancy. The JD WH48A gets it’s power from a powerful FS600V gasoline engine that is designed and built by Kawasaki. This twin cylinder, air cooled engine has a displacement of 0.603 liters and operates at 3600 rpm. The air intake into the engine is first passed through a dual element air filter which prevents impurities from entering into the combustion chamber.

The John Deere WH48A  uses an operator presence system that automatically shuts off the machine when you are not using it. The hydrostatic transmission on this machine means that you never have to change gears. All you need to do is press down harder on the accelerator to speed up and release it to slow down. This transfers power to the large rear wheels. These measure 16×7.5-8 (16 inch diameter, 7.5 inch width, 8 inch rim diameter). The front castor wheels are a lot smaller than this because they don’t provide any traction or power. They measure 9×3.5-4 (9 inch diameter, 3.5 inch width, 4 inch inch rim diameter).

Even though the John Deere WH48A is a walk behind lawnmower, it’s actually very heavy, weighing in at 332.5 kg (733 lbs). But when you take into account the fact that the cutting width of the 7 Iron II deck is 48 inches, this weight is understandable. The mower deck comprises of 3 blades and the deck is belt driven.
