John Deere LX188

The John Deere LX188 was a reasonably popular lawn mower, enjoying a production run that lasted 7 years from 1991 up until 1998 when production ceased. If you are looking for a smaller model in the ‘LX’ series, then you may be interested in checking out the John Deere LX176 lawn mower or the John Deere LX178 lawnmower. The engine powering the JD LX188 is a 0.437 liter, 2 cylinder Kawasaki FD501V model. This gasoline powered engine has natural aspiration and requires 1.5 liters of oil to keep it fully lubricated and operating efficiently. The total power output of this engine is 17 hp. Unlike a lot of John Deere Lawnmowers, the JD LX188 is liquid cooled, not air cooled.

Before reaching the wheels of the John Deere LX188, power from the engine is transferred via a Tuff Torq K61 hydrostatic transmission that gives the lawnmower infinite speeds traveling forwards and infinite speeds for reversing also. There is a choice of 3 different sized mower decks that are compatible with the JD LX188; the smallest is a mower deck with a 38 inch cutting width. The next size up has a cutting width of 44 inches. The biggest mower deck that is compatible with this lawnmower is a 48 inch mowing deck. While there is no cab for this lawnmower, you can instead use a sun umbrella to keep the sun off during the summer.

However during the winter, the John Deere LX188 is also still useful, just not for cutting the grass. Thanks to it’s ability to accommodate many JD attachments, the JD LX188 can also use use a front mounted snow blower or snow blade. Also if you don’t want to just eject grass clippings out the side of the machine, you can attach a bagger to the back of it to collect then. One Review of the “John Deere LX188”

  1. Louis Conte says:

Was and is great for me.

    Year of Manufacture: 1994
Pros: Mower has plenty of power even with the blower for the grass catcher attached. Have approx. 45,000. sq feet of lawn. I also cut my Dad’s lawn for the first 10 years approx. 25,000. square feet. It is now 20 yrs old and the deck is wearing out etc. I’m going to keep it until it dies. The Kawasaki water cooled engine has run perfectly for 20 yrs.
Cons: The only con is that I cannot match the same tractor today without going thousands of dollars over the amount I paid for the LX188
Attachments: I have the 48″ Deck and the Vacuum attachment (that hooks onto the pulley on the deck) for the rear bagger. This worked well and is still working although the wear is starting to show.
    Modifications: None
