John Deere 6140D

The John Deere 6140D is one of the mid range utility tractors from the 6000 range by JD. The tractor is assembled in the Saltillo plant which is located in Mexico as are the rest of the 6000 series like the John Deere 6100D, John Deere 6115D and the John Deere 6130D utility tractors. The tractors are equipped with a JD made PowerTech engine. The model number of this engine is the 4045H. This 4 cylinder, 8 valve engine features an intercooled turbocharger and is powered by diesel. The engine has a displacement of 4.5 liters and a compression ratio of 19:1. Starting the engine is left to a 12 volt battery which produces 925 cold cranking amps. This battery is then recharged through a 90 amp alternator.

The John Deere 6140D comes in a range of configurations, but mostly defined by 2 specific characteristics. The first is whether it’s a 2WD or MFWD chassis. The second is whether the JD 6140D has a cab or open operator station (both of these have a ROPS). A number of halogen lights come with the tractor as standard. However you can also purchase additional light packages to improve it’s performance when working in the dark.

The John Deere 6140D can be powered with regular diesel or instead you can use biodiesel to power it. Looking after the JD 6140D is relatively easy. Gaining access to the engine and the rest of the controls can be achieved quickly thanks to it’s tilt hood protecting the engine which makes servicing it very efficient. If you own one of these utility tractors, feel free to leave a review of it below to let others know what they should expect from owning it. Don’t forget to include details about what you are happy with and disappointed with on the tractor.

    Year of Manufacture: 2013
Pros: Nice little tractor, I replaced my 7430 with a 6140D. I use the tractor on my discbine and it works great. I also use it for running my 13” auger, and 480cu mixer wagon. The tractor has close to 2000 hrs on it now and no major issues. Heard the new 6135E has a better transmission.
    Cons: No floor heat
Having to stop to switch from A to B to C
Having to use the clutch to shift between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd

    Dairy use

    Year of Manufacture: 2013
Pros: Very compact and maneuverable for dairy farm work. Very good loader lifting power 2000lb+ plastic wrapped bales. Even with the cab it is low enough to get in most all of my barns. Love the shuttle wet clutch. Used it to agitate my lagoon and had no issues, lots of power to stir the shit.
Cons: Hydraulics are loud, rubber cab mounts squeak on rough terrain which can get annoying. Cab door locks sometimes need adjustment to latch properly. Windshield wiper motor wipes way, way too fast! My biggest concern is that the starter motor grinds on the ring gear, sometimes 2 or 3 times before it meshes with ring gear. John Deere replaced the starter once already because of a recall but it still grinds occasionally. One last thing, bells and whistles go off sometimes while I’m driving down the road warning to stop the tractor but it never throws any codes.

LIKE TRACTOR FINE FOR THE APPLICATION WE’VE PUT IT IN
(LIGHT TO MODERATE DUTY) I WISH THE HYDRAULICS WEREN’T SO NOISY BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS THAT MAY ARISE AFTER WARRANTY. WE HAVE 3 PREMIUM 7 SERIES JD TRACTORS AND DID NOT EXPECT THIS LESS EXPENSIVE MODEL TO MEASURE UP TO THOSE STANDARDS. SO FAR EVEN WITH THE SHORTCOMINGS, ITS A BETTER TRACTOR THAN COMPETITIVE COMPANYS “BEST”.

    Year of Manufacture: 0
Pros: AN ENTRY LEVEL PRICE FOR A JOHN DEERE TRACTOR
AN ALTERNATIVE TO OVERPRICED “PREMIUM” TRACTORS
A NICE TRACTOR FOR UTILITY USAGE, BUT USE YOUR 7 SERIES TRACTORS FOR THE REAL WORK.
Cons: EXTREMELY NOISY, HYDRAULICS, PTO ETC.
DEALERS NOT TOO PROUD OF IT NOR EXTREMELY HELPFUL
CONCERN ABOUT NOVICES OR “CHEAPO’S” BUYING THINKING IT CAN BE PUT IN TOUGH APPLICATIONS AND JUDGING THE ENTIRE JD LINEUP BY THE TRACTOR(YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR)

    It sucks!

    Year of Manufacture: 0
    Pros: None
Cons: We purchased a 6140D a year ago last fall. Last spring we finally put it under load pulling an 18 foot MC shredder. The PTO howled so bad, you had to have the radio at full volume to mask the noise or it would drive you out of the cab. It was in the shop more than in ours getting worked on, and nothing helped. 4 new pto shafts, bearings, and races…an entire new bearing housing…nothing. They finally ordered us a new 6140D and it howled worse than the first one did. They have NO clue what the problem is, and evidently aren’t willing to fix it or exchange the tractors for something else. We waited until March of this year for the “new:” parts to come in that would fix the howl. Guess what? It didn’t help…again. This is a piece of crap product, and John Deere should be totally embarrassed for trying to sell such a worthless product.
