The John Deere 4850 tractor is the largest machine in the JD 50 series of tractors. Smaller machines include the likes of the John Deere 4250, the John Deere 4450 and the John Deere 4650 tractors. To give you an idea of it’s size, it’s worth noting that it operating weight for the ligher 2WD chassis version is a massive 8491 kg (18,720 lbs), with the 4WD version weighing a lot more. The wheels supporting this weight are understandably large; the rear wheels each measure 20.8-38 (20.8 inch width, 38 inch rim diameter), the front wheels are 11-16 (11 inch width, 16 inch rim diameter). You will often see dual wheels on this machine.

The engine powering the wheels is made in house by JD. This engine is a 6 cylinder model that has a total displacement of 7.6 liters. The engine uses a turbocharger that is intercooled. It’s cooling system is quite big, with a capacity to hold up to 30.3 liters. The engine fires at a compression ratio of 15:1. The lubrication system holds 19.9 liters of oil. The engine has a dry type air filter which scrubs the air intake of contaminants before it enters the combustion chamber. The maximum claimed power output from the engine is 190 hp. This engine powers the John Deere 4850 up to a max speed of 28.9 kph (18 mph). The gearbox used for controlling it’s speed is a Power Shift model from JD. This gives it 15 speeds going forwards and 4 for reversing.

The John Deere 4850 first appeared as a replacement for the John Deere 4840 tractor. The JD 4850 has a fuel tank that can hold up to 386.1 liters (102 US gallons) of diesel, allowing for many days of work before it needs to be refilled. The rear hitch on this tractor has a maximum safe lifting capacity of 4354 kg (9599 lbs). If you have ever used or owned this machine, then make sure to leave a review of it below.

One Review of the “John Deere 4850”

  1. Cody Loyd says:

This is a solid tractor but the comment that caused me to respond with this was they stated it had a large capacity of coolant and large fuel tank. Not true.

    Year of Manufacture: 1986
    Pros: Great Tractor
Cons: Limited cooling capacity for heavy pulls and small fuel tank. Won’t make a 16 hour day, won’t make a 12 hour day in some operations.
