The John Deere 4000 tractor is not part of the newer JD 4000 series of tractors. The JD 4000 is part of a line from the late sixties and early seventies that also includes the John Deere 4020 and the John Deere 4320 tractors. When buying the JD 4000 brand new, it came with a choice of 2 different engines. The first is a gasoline engine that is liquid cooled and is a 6 cylinder model. The engine fires at a compression ratio of 7.5:1 and is naturally aspirated. It has a total displacement of 5.9 liters. The other engine choice is a diesel model that is also liquid cooled. This engine fires at a compression ratio of 16.5:1 and is also naturally aspirated. This engine has a total displacement of 6.6 liters. Both engines are designed and built by JD themselves. The max power output from either engine is 96.9 hp.

The John Deere 4000 tractor comes with a choice of 2 different gearboxes. The first transmission setup is a John Deere full power shift that gives it 8 speeds going forwards and 4 for reversing. The other transmission choice is a John Deere partially synchronized Synchro-Range gearbox that gives it 6 forward speeds and 2 for reversing. The Synchro-Range gearbox gives the JD 4000 a top speed of 27 kph (16.8 mph) going forwards and 9.5 kph (5.9 mph) when it’s reversing. The gearbox transfers power to the rear wheels which each measure 16.9-34 (16.9 inch width, 34 inch rim diameter).

The front wheels on the John Deere 4000 which are responsible for steering it are smaller, measuring 9.5-15 (9.5 inch width, 15 inch rim diameter). The total weight of the JD 4000 can be as high 4930 kg (10,870 lbs) when it’s fully ballasted, but without ballast, it’s normal operating weight is 3903 kg (8605 lbs). There are a range of attachments that are compatible with this tractor. These include plows, trailers and front end loaders like the John Deere 148 and the John Deere 158.
