Husqvarna YTH20F42T

The engine powering the Husqvarna YTH20F42T is a Courage model which is designed and built by Kohler. This is a single cylinder engine that has overhead valves. It provides the YTH 20F42T with 20 hp to power the wheels as well as the mower deck. The engine keeps fully oiled using a full pressure lubrication system that incorporates an oil filter. Other models from Husqvarna that are like this one are the Husqvarna YTH2042 lawn mower and the Husqvarna 2042LS which both actually have the same sized mower deck and the same power output from their engines.

The engine transfers power to the blades of the mower deck through an electric clutch which activates the belt drive system. The deck can cut grass at 6 different heights. The highest is 3.5 inches above the surface of your lawn, while the lowest is just 0.5 inches above your lawn. The deck spits out the grass clippings on the right hand side using the plastic discharge flap to deflect them and prevent them from flying everywhere. You can optionally use a mulching plug which will turn the grass clippings into a mashed up pulp that quickly rots. However, you may not want any grass clippings on your lawn. If this is the case you should purchase the optional bagger attachment to collect them.

There are a number of other attachments that you can get for the YTH 20F42T also. These include the obvious ones like a moss rake (dethatcher), a utility cart, a front blade and a snow blower. The fuel tank on this model can hold up to (4 US gallons) of gasoline. The Husqvarna YTH20F42T has an average minimum turning radius of 18 inches. Please leave your thoughts on this model below. One Review of the “Husqvarna YTH20F42T”

  1. Steve Watkin says:

It’s nine years old and still runs like a top, overall it has held up well and expect many more years of use out of it. We mow about .75 acres with lots of turning, mild slopes. Would highly recommend for value, performance and durability.

    Year of Manufacture: 2006
Pros: Easy to maintain, parts readily available, parts relatively inexpensive, comfortable and easy to handle and operate, good value, good power and speed , good turning circle, will cut in reverse, “easy drain” oil fitting, has transmission release rod for manually rolling or towing. Blades remove and sharpen easily ( I lift the front of the mower to remove blades and clean under deck).
Cons: Not good in muddy / slick areas, “easy drain” oil fitting comes loose–check often. Engine head bolts came loose as well after few years in service–no damage incurred. Front suspension was damaged when mower got stuck–somewhat delicate.
Attachments: Attachments available but we only use wagon periodically.
Modifications: We use mulching blades and wire the discharge flap open to keep the under deck cleaner and prevent clogging.
