Husqvarna YTH1542XP

The Husqvarna YTH1542XP garden tractor lawn mower is not nearly as powerful as practically every other Husqvarna machine available. It’s at the opposite end of the spectrum when you compare it against the likes of the Husqvarna GTH26K54 and the Husqvarna GTH2754 lawn tractors. The YTH 1542 XP gets it’s power from a twin cylinder Kawasaki that pumps out 15 hp. This engine has a full pressure lubrication system and uses a paper element air filter to purify the air intake. Even though this lawnmower is a small one, it’s still keystarted using a 12 volt battery. This battery gets recharged once the engine is running through a 13 amp alternator.

The Husqvarna YTH1542XP uses a Hydro-Gear 314-0510 hydrostatic transmission to transfer power from the engine to the wheels. The amount of power that the wheels receive is controlled using a foot pedal. The Hydro Gear transmission makes the YTH1542 XP an automatic with infinite speeds. While this tractor mower is much smaller than others, it unfortunately doesn’t have a very small turning radius. It’s minimum turning radius is 18 inches.

The mower deck on the Husqvarna YTH1542XP has a cutting width of 42 inches. This mower deck is engaged with an electric PTO. The blades are driven by a belt. The deck has an operating range of 3 inches from a low of 0.5 inches above the ground up to a height of 3.5 inches. The deck is raised and lowered electrically which gives it infinite cutting heights. You can optionally purchase a rear bagger attachment for the YTH 1542 XP to collect the grass clippings which will leave your lawn looking a lot cleaner and neater than just discharging them out the side of the deck. The Husqvarna YTH1542 XP comes with an hourmeter so that you will be accurately able to gauge when to bring it in for a servicing.

This has been an amazing machine for what I put it through. It is a little light for some of the cutting but it got the job done. No engine problems in the first 500 hours, I think I only changed the gas filter one time in there. Not as strong or built as solidly as others but I have not been disappointed. The two bagger on the back is used heavily in the fall as I live in a woods and it really sucks it up well. I wish it had more capacity but I make due.

Pros: Small handy machine with and amazing engine. I live in a woods and the bagger really can pull up the leaves, it does not start on fire like another brand I had when the leaves pile up in front.
Cons: Not as narrow turning, Mine has the hand hydrostatic not foot.
    Attachments: bagger

I purposely bought this mower over Deere because of the Kawasaki engine. 1244 hours and it’s like new.
BUT the Rod Pedal Control (part#532199000)is no longer available. Are you kidding me. I have to buy a new tractor because of a $20 part!!!
Please tell me it ain’t so!!

Pros: Kaw 15hp engine is a workhorse!
Cons: Rod Pedal Control 532199000 no longer available!!!

To Mirror Chris Hitchcock, my tractor also broke the rod pedal control which I ordered through Sears and Jacks only to be cancelled months later. An obviously under-engineered part breaks due to normal use and instead of AYP and Husqvarna providing an improved replacement, they do absolutely nothing.

I purchased it to mow I used it for all yard work. I only had one issue with it this year after 17 years of use. The motor is amazing change the filter and fuel filter and she’ll Ron like a precision fly wheel. Tires last forever, mower deck is solid, suspension is still durable with only grease every two years. I broke the middle gear for the drive belt without knowing I think I might have damage the tranny. one more thing, she went from mowing about 16,000sq ft at my first home to 3 acres at my second. And with tire chains she was great in the snow. The tractor is small but its a beast.

We purchased this mower new from a Husqvarna dealer May 25,2001. It was serviced every spring before use. Only yesterday, May 31, 2019 did a problem develop that will probably be too expensive to repair for the age of the mower. We mowed approximately an acre of yard on a regular basis every summer. Couldn’t have asked for a better mower.

  5. John Heard says:

The ugliest problem is the gas tank developed a crack in the bottom and Husqvarna discontinued the part. No replacement was available. It can’t be repaired with any form of glue. Without a useable gas tank the machine is absolutely worthless. I was able to repair it with a plastic weld kit. Not sure how long the repair will last but hope it is more or less permanent.

Mows fast as Zero turns, feels safe on incline. Always starts easily, Lucas fuel addative always used in fuel. No issues after 13 yrs use. Bought as a discount return from Lowes with 7 hrs. Best investment I have ever made. Belts original but did pop for replacements $9 ea for drive, deck on E-bay. Probably will never need them. Mower looks as new, and all original.

      Year of Manufacture: 2006
Pros: Good design, rides and mows well. 20 hp Kohler VERY reliable.
Cons: Can’t find any functional only cosmetic. All parts readily available from several on-line sellers. Chrome reflectors for head lights faded from sun damage.
Attachments: Oregan Mulch Blades, with mulch kit.
      Modifications: Quartz headlamp bulbs
