Husqvarna 2146XLS

The Husqvarna 2146XLS garden tractor lawn mower is quite similar to the likes of the Husqvarna YTH21K46 garden tractor and even the Husqvarna RZ4621 zero turn lawn mower as they both have an engine with the exact same horsepower and a mower deck with the the same cutting width. The engine that powers the 2146 XLS garden tractor is a Vanguard model that is designed and manufactured by Briggs and Stratton. This engine is a 2 cylinder model with cast iron cylinder liners. The size of the engine comes in at 0.627 liters while it produces 21 hp. The engine is kept properly oiled throughout operation thanks to a fully pressurized lubrication system. Power from the engine gets to the wheels through a hydrostatic transmission that makes this lawn mower an automatic with no gear changing required. The rear wheels through which power is transmitted each measure 20×10 (20 inch diameter, 10 inch width).

The minimum turning radius of the Husqvarna 2146XLS is fairly low thanks to the rear differential lock. It comes in at 18 inches. which is not bad for a tractor mower of this size. The cutting width of the 2146 XLS measures 46 inches. This mower deck is made from very strong steel and the blades are belt driven. The deck can be raised and lowered from a high of 3.5 inches above the ground to a low of 0.5 inches. In total the mower deck has 6 different operating heights which should be enough for most people.

The total weight of the Husqvarna 2146XLS comes to 283.5 kg (625 lbs). When you purchase the 2146 XLS brand new, it comes with a 2 year limited warranty. For the money (around $3k if I recall correctly), it should have had a stronger frame and deck supports from the start. I don’t know that I’d recommend Husqvarna and I’m not sure if I’ll consider them for my next garden tractor. All-in-all it’s still rolling, but it hasn’t been as tough as I expected it to be and it hasn’t been a dream to use along the way. With the new tranny, I expect it’ll run another 4-5 years. I expect any garden tractor to last 10 years without major issue, and 20 years with maintenance wear item replacements (bearings, bushings, belts, filters, tires, etc) and perhaps one major repair. This has had about triple the failures that I’d expected over the 12 years I’ve had it. Dealer has been helpful where assistance was sought, but on my dime.

    Year of Manufacture: 2008
Pros: Locking diff (pro and con), supposedly Japanese built engine. Worked well for traction on grass, never really had slippage issues with reasonable inclines.
Cons: Locking diff should have made it the cats meow for snow plowing and hill mowing, but the frame and other components were not up to the task. Like the other reviewer, I had the frame break at about 7-8 years, which also damaged the transmission. Again, like the other reviewer, the deck arm mount on mine broke around 6 years of service, had my father-in-law weld that back in place. Engine initially had some issues, but was fixed under warranty. Right-side axle just broke, sheared about a half inch within the wheel, so ordered another tranny to get it back to service. Engine also leaks oil at the gimmicky quick access drain. Replaced two spindles on the deck that failed, with new ones that can be greased.

Pros: it mows up and down steep hills realy good , starts and runs great , great on gas and plenty of power . i mow 5 acres 1 to 2 times , a week since may 2010 . I realy like the tires for traction , no spinning going up steep hills mowing or sliding going down or along the edge . nice high back on seat . shouts grass out of deck good and mows even in a rolling hilly lawm .
Cons: transmisstion fell off and broke off frame after low hours and light use and fix with small brackets under warrenty . weld broke on mowing deck were lift arms are . fix under warrenty 4 yrs. mowing use . lift arm for grass adjustment broke . crank case gasket broke on 21 hp. vanguard model 380000 engine after 6 yrs. hood bends and was replace under warrenty 2nd one no good either . steering wheel getting sloppy with play and is my next fix .
Attachments: bought lawn sweeper after warrenty fix , and pulls easy with no problems with frame brackets added from dealer .
