Cub Cadet GT1554

The Cub Cadet GT1554 garden tractor lawn mower is part of the 1500 Series of lawn tractors. The engine powering the GT 1554 is a Kohler Courage engine. This is a twin cylinder model with overhead valves and a max power output of 27 hp. Each of the cylinders has cast iron sleeves for longevity. The engine uses a fully pressurized lubrication system to keep everything working smoothly. The lawn mower is key started by a 12 volt battery which supplies 235 cold cranking amps. This battery is recharged via a 15 amp alternator. The engine on the GT 1554 transfers power to the wheels through a belt drive system that uses a heavy duty Kevlar belt. The deck is engaged electronically.

The mower deck on the Cub Cadet GT1554 tractor mower has 6 different operating heights from a low 1.5 inches above the ground to a high of 4 inches above the ground. The height is adjusted in increments of 0.5 inches. The deck that houses the 3 mowing blades is made from 11 gauge steel. For dealing with the grass clippings on the GT 1554, the operator has 3 different choices. The cleanest and neatest option is to use the optional 3 bag bagger attachment to collect the clippings. Unfortunately though, this is very time consuming, so a lot of people tend to either just discharge the clippings out the side of the deck or use an optional mulching plug instead.

The top speed of the Cub Cadet GT1554 is 8.4 kph (5.2 mph) going forward and in reverse it can reach 3.7 kph (2.3 mph). The rear wheels which drive the GT1554 each measure 23×10.5 (23 inch diameter, 10.5 inch width). The front wheels each measure 16×7.5 (16 inch diameter, 7.5 inch width). You can also use this garden tractor lawn mower during the winter thanks to the fact that you can attach a 42″ snow thrower to it as well as a 46″ dozer blade.

I picked one up three years ago from a guy who believed the engine was bad. It turned out to be a leaking head gasket. It was a pain to fix but pretty cheap. Since then I’ve been working it pretty hard every week mowing about 5 acres weekly. It has been totally reliable and does a great job of mowing. I just installed Gator blades which really improved the cut and productivity. I wish it had power steering but I keep it well greased so it’s not too bad.

    Year of Manufacture: 0
Pros: Totally reliable and plenty of power
Cons: I wish it had power steering
    Attachments: 54” deck only
    Modifications: None

I got mine new in June of 08 from Home Depot. Has about 750 hrs on it now and no trouble to speak of. I use the heck out of it mowing 3 acres and hauling a lawn trailer, plus pushing some old cars around. The parking brake and cruise both quit in about a month after purchase, but I don’t use either one anyway. The throttle lever is a knuckle buster, and going from drive to reverse can buck you off. The hood should open opposite to what it does, as it impedes access to the engine, but for mowing a lot of long, straight stretches like I have, it works great.

    Year of Manufacture: 8
    Pros: Super mower deck
Cons: Cruise control worked once. Parking brake not at all.
    Attachments: none
    Modifications: none

All the negative comments got me down, cuz this mower has been my reliable mower from 2005 to 2017, and 2017 is when I got officially old enough to not wanna work on it! It’s not a perfect mower, but it’s been reliable and effective for most of its 14 years in my service. I have replaced the belt every 3-5 years or so (except one year, but that was because of ignorant neighbors being “helpful”). I replaced the nut that the steering column locks into, the ignition switch, and now the issue is the cable that works with the accelerator pedal. Regular maintenance otherwise. For 14 years!

    Year of Manufacture: 2005
Pros: Durability, it needs rusting and worn parts replaced often now
Cons: Deck wash system wotks for about the first 2 months, then was useless.
Modifications: Used a belt one inch shorter than the local Tractor Supply keeps trying to sell me.

Haven’t been able to keep a belt on deck since I bought it. It either breaks or jumps off. I’ve had it in the shop many times, lots of dollars. New spindles, blades, pulleys, bearings and worst of all, several belts a year. No one has answers or can fix the deck so it works reliably. I would not own another Cub Cadet if they were giving them away with pie and apple cider… The last bill at the dealer was $687. Can’t throw it away because I’ve got to much in it and it isn’t a hot seller either because of it’s poor reviews. I am now looking at grafting a known good deck from another brand on my mower. We’ll see how that works.

    Year of Manufacture: 2005
    Pros: None to speak of.
Cons: Purchased at auction 5 years ago with 141 hours on it. It now has a 153 hours. I have 3 acres, not flat and it takes roughly 4-5 hours.
    Attachments: none but mower deck
    Modifications: none

  7. Kenny Gulley says:

    Negative all the way.
This machine appears to have been engineered by accountants and is an absolute piece of junk.

    Year of Manufacture: 2007
    Pros: None
Cons: Kohler engine compression release doesn’t work very well causing the engine to crank slowly (hard on the starter & battery)
Battery had to be replaced every other year
Drive belt had to be replaced every 50-60 hours
Deck spindles lasted well as did deck drive belt
Plastic bushings on the front wheels is a non funny joke
Frame cracked at the dashboard at 350 hours
Not sure what I’ll buy next, but I’m certain it won’t be a Cub Cadet
    Attachments: 54 inch mowing deck
    Modifications: None

the only thing that work is the motor

    Year of Manufacture: 2005
    Pros: non
Cons: it has been a piece of junk since the day we purchased it.it has been in the shopmore than not, we purchased it new from Tractor supply, with the extended warranty, We are living on social security, and this purchased was something we had to save for, It was a huge error in judgement, You have never been able to fix this tractor and since we are not under warranty anymore we have spent hundreds of dollars trying to keep it running to no avail, we got it out of the shop last week mowed once and it quit again a new problem, most everything has been replaced the only thing that has always worked is the motor.
    Modifications: none
