The Craftsman MTS5500 garden tractor lawn mower is another one of the Craftsman’s large tractor mowers. It is fairly similar to the likes of the Craftsman 28981 Professional 26 hp 50″ lawnmower and the Craftsman 28672 Professional 42 Inch 24 HP Lawn Mower mower but there are some fairly noticeable differences. The engine that powers the MTS 5500 is an Extended Life Series engine from Briggs and Stratton. This engine has cast iron lined twin cylinders that gives the engine a total displacement of 0.725 liters. The engine is key started using a 12 volt battery and uses a full pressure lubrication system to prevent the engine from seizing up or wearing too rapidly. The engine is cooled using a fan.

The hydrostatic transmission which is foot pedal operated transfers power from the engine to the rear wheels. This makes the Craftsman MTS5500 an automatic with infinite speeds in forwards as well as in reverse. The rear wheels each measure 22×9.5-8 (22 inch diameter, 9.5 inch width, 8 inch rim diameter). The MTS 5500 tractor mower is steered using a sector and pinion steering set up. This controls the front wheels, which both measure 16×6.5-6 (16 inch diameter, 6.5 inch width, 6 inch rim diameter). The total weight of this lawnmower comes to 254.5 kg (561 lbs).

Even though the Craftsman MTS5500 tractor lawnmower is a large machine, it fortunately has a relatively small turning radius of just 18 inches. So if you do find yourself in a tight spot, it should be fairly easy to manoeuvre in. The mower deck on this model has a cutting width of 48 inches. This means that if your garden is less than 1 acre in size, you should probably opt for a small, cheaper lawnmower. The deck has 3 blades and it can be raised an lowered from a height of 4 inches down to 1.5 inches above the ground. You can optionally use a rear bagger on the MTS 5500 to collect the grass clippings.
